Broken Halos, Borrowed Wings
I stood breathless
as the fire burned in silence
from her stern and tearful eyes,
my heart assumed idol worship
was a blanket covering wounds,
too busy polishing my self manufactured halo
for noticing how the clothe
had snapped against her frail feathers.
When that gaze
carried razors that raked over my heart,
deep inside
the god I never was,
died.
