Retreat into Hope
Crackle of fireplace
is the only sound to disrupt the silence,
smell of hot chocolate and fresh baked cookies
entice with their sugary spell.
Outside the fresh layer of unblemished white
lowers the temperature one more degree.
Hearts of family feeling the chill
more from distance than the snow.
Father's desire to breech the gap between them
by bringing his family to this mountain retreat
away from cell phones, internet
and the daily array of distractions
which had forced such a gap
between parents, their teenage son and daughter.
Unspoken thoughts sip on cocoa
biting cookies with hints of frustration,
Dad feeling more distraught
that in the quiet splendor of alabaster majesty
he is unable set free the wings of their souls.
Phone rang, being warned that blizzard was coming,
power severed and they would be totally cut off,
thanking the caller, hanging up the phone,
announcing the danger to his family.
Tension erupts in fear of all the priorities
they will miss, words become broadsides,
at last the feelings simmering
within resentment's stew boils over.
Tears follow, hearts let go of their angst anvils,
then the layer exposed that time had shredded
slowly forgotten family bonds awaken in the aftermath.
Sitting back as tensions turned to hugs
with father grateful for wrong number
so he could use it as springboard
to turn this retreat from frigid seconds,
into one's warmed by love
